Over the weekend, Senator Susan Collins sent a member of her Senate office staff to campaign for her at a Washington County Maine GOP event where the staffer told attendees, “I can assure you that there’s two people that want you to vote for Senator Collins. One is the Senate Majority Leader and two is our president, President Trump.”
By dispatching official staff to tell Maine Republicans behind closed doors that she stands with Trump, while refusing to confirm publicly that she’ll be supporting his reelection, Susan Collins is once again attempting to play both sides.
Despite Senator Collins’ silence, Mainers need look no further than Collins’ own record to know she’s all-in on Trump:
1) According to CQ, Senator Collins voted with Donald Trump 94% of the time.
2) Senator Collins has been a key vote for Donald Trump on everything from the tax plan that gave corporations and the wealthy trillions in tax breaks to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh and every one of Trump’s judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018 -- even those “deemed unqualified by the American Bar Association.” She joined with Mitch McConnell to acquit Trump in the impeachment trial, after voting 12 times against including witnesses and evidence.
3) Donald Trump has said he's 100% behind Senator Collins' reelection.
4) Staffers for the president’s reelection campaign “worked to get her on the ballot” by collecting signatures door-to-door and at Trump events.
If Collins can send staff to promote her relationship with Trump at a GOP event, then she should be able to answer a simple question for all Mainers: will she vote to reelect the president?
