Senator Collins continues her 600 day streak of refusing to be honest with Mainers about whether she supports Trump’s reelection
In an interview on Fox News Radio yesterday, Senator Susan Collins dodged again when asked whether she believes Donald Trump deserves a second term in the White House, saying that she’s “tried to stay out of presidential politics.”
Yesterday’s evasive maneuver was far from an isolated incident. Senator Collins has spent the last 600 days refusing to answer one simple question: is she voting for Trump?
Senator Collins has made a political calculation that her odds of reelection will be better if Mainers don’t know the truth about her support for Trump, but she can’t hide from her record of supporting his agenda in Congress. According to CQ, she voted with Trump 94% of the time--even backing his tax giveaway that put Social Security and Medicare at risk while raising taxes on middle class Maine families. And in the first two years of Trump’s presidency, Collins voted to confirm every single one of his judicial nominees, including the ones rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Association.
“After voting with Trump 94% of the time, it’s ridiculous that Senator Collins thinks she can pull the wool over our eyes by refusing to take a public position,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Mainers have spent nearly four years watching Collins side with Trump, we know exactly who she supports in Washington--and it’s not us anymore.”
