Westbrook, MAINE - Congressman Bruce Poliquin tried today to trumpet his fiscal bonafides by voting for a Balanced Budget Amendment, but Poliquin’s support today comes just months after he voted to explode the national debt to give huge tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations. To make it worse, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office this week even released a new report jacking up the price tag of the Republican tax bill, concluding that they will cost $1.9 trillion over the next ten years.
Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued the following statement in response:
“After voting to explode the national debt in order to deliver huge tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations, it’s pretty clear that Congressman Poliquin is no champion of fiscal responsibility - and his vote today isn’t about to change that.
“What his vote will do is force deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare, all delivered under the guise of fiscal restraint and tough choices. Speaker Ryan would love nothing more than to gut these programs before he leaves town, and with this vote, Bruce Poliquin has shown he is ready and willing to help make those cuts a reality - no matter what he says to try to make Mainers believe otherwise.”
