Senator Collins championed the legislation that led to the Postal Service's financial strain

Following reports that at least two mail-sorting machines have been removed from Maine facilities, Mainers who rely on the Postal Service are feeling the impacts. In Washington, Senator Susan Collins’ Republican allies are actively blocking efforts to clean up the mess that she made by championing legislation that laid the groundwork for the USPS’s current financial crisis.

Already, Maine poultry farmers are contending with thousands of dollars in losses due to shipment delays and Mainers who rely on USPS to keep their small businesses running or receive prescription medications are worried about what the changes in service could mean for them. According to the National Association of Letter Carriers Local 92 President Mark Seitz, for the Postal facilities that have already lost equipment, “the damage is done” and “those machines aren’t coming back.” The need for federal intervention to save the USPS has never been more clear, but Mitch McConnell and Senator Collins’ other congressional Republican colleagues have made it clear that they’ll obstruct legislation designed to do just that.

“Senator Collins got the USPS into this mess, and now her party is blocking efforts to get us out of it,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “We need a Senator who will fight to make sure that older Mainers, veterans, rural communities, and small businesses owners can get the deliveries they depend on, but Collins and her party are playing political games with this essential service.”
