Westbrook, MAINE – Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett today called on Republican gubernatorial candidate Shawn Moody to tell Governor Paul LePage to stop threatening Maine jobs and approve the sale of $117 million in voter-approved bonds he’s holding up.
“Holding up these bonds does nothing but put hardworking Maine people, Maine businesses, and Maine’s economy at risk. That’s why Shawn Moody should call on Governor LePage to approve them immediately,” said Phil Bartlett, Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party. “It’s wrong to leave these construction projects in limbo, and it’s wrong to put the jobs of thousands of Mainers in jeopardy. If Moody doesn’t speak up, then it’s clear that he’s putting his allegiance to Governor LePage ahead of the interests of Maine people.”
The governor’s opposition to the bonds “was a stunning move that sent a shock through the state’s construction industry”, according to the Bangor Daily News. It even prompted Senate President Mike Thibodeau to say that he was “disappointed in this decision that may put Mainers out of work and adversely impact Maine businesses.”
According to the Bangor Daily News report, the bulk of the money was dedicated to infrastructure projects, some of which are already underway, while other funds went towards environmental, drinking water, housing and research and development projects.
