In response to state representative Laurel Libby serving as a Republican National Convention delegate for fellow white supremacist defender Donald Trump, the Maine Democratic Party released the following statement:

“After a white supremacist murdered a counter-protester at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017, then-President Trump stood before the American people in the aftermath of the tragedy and insisted that there were “very fine people” involved “on both sides” of the incident.

“When white supremacist neo-Nazis came to Maine looking to establish a paramilitary training camp and harassed and intimidated Mainers, Laurel Libby stood on the floor of the Maine House and said, “I would like to know what they did [...] that was wrong.”

“Maine people deserve elected leaders who will stand up to white supremacists and neo-Nazis, not MAGA extremists like Donald Trump and Laurel Libby who defend them. Making weak excuses for the hateful individuals who harass and intimidate our fellow Mainers based on who they are, the color of their skin, or where they were born is an affront to Maine values and a betrayal of everything that America stands for.”
