Westbrook, MAINE - Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court’s attack on unions in its Janus v. the American Federation of State decision:
“Maine and America wouldn’t be what it is today without strong unions. Unions fought for the rights of the laborers who built our cities and towns, fought for better working conditions in our factories and mills, and fought for educators, nurses, and so many others to have a living wage and better healthcare.
“This decision will be cheered as a victory by Republicans and corporate special interests, but, in reality, it is nothing more than a gut punch to countless working people across Maine and America. By making it more difficult for workers to fight for their rights, this decision will only serve to rig the system even more in favor of the wealthy and corporations while leaving working folks further behind.
“Maine Democrats are going to continue to fight in solidarity with unions against Republican attempts to roll back workers’ rights in Maine, because when unions are strong, our middle class is strong, our economy is strong, and our state is strong.”
