Augusta, MAINE – Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued the following statement tonight in response to the Maine Republican Party’s assertion that the shadowy, anonymous “news” website the Maine Examiner is “a personal project of Jason Savage and is not related to his work for the Maine Republican Party”:
“There aren’t any ifs, ands, or buts about it: Jason Savage is the heart of the Maine Republican Party, and he created this misleading content with the singular goal of using his party’s apparatus to amplify it. He did so deceitfully, under the cloak of secrecy, and with the intent to mislead Maine people.
“The argument they’re making now is nothing more than a sad, last-ditch Hail Mary to bail themselves out – but any Mainer will tell you that it just doesn’t pass the straight-face test. What Savage did was wrong, and he owes the people of Maine nothing short of an apology – although his resignation would be more apropriate.”

The Maine Democratic Party last month filed a complaint, along with an addendum, with the Maine Ethics Commission requesting an investigation into the Maine Republican Party and its ties to the shadowy, anonymous “news” site the Maine Examiner.
The initial consideration of the complaint is scheduled to occur on February 22, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. at the Maine Ethics Commission’s office in Augusta. During the meeting, the Commissioners are expected to decide whether or not to conduct an investigation into the Maine Examiner and the Maine Republican Party.
