Westbrook, MAINE – Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Katie Mae Simpson issued the following statement today in response to Senator Susan Collins’ spokeswoman saying that Senator Collins will not take into consideration a nominee’s position on Roe v. Wade:
“For someone who has been regarded as a defender of women’s rights, Senator Collins' outright refusal to consider a nominee’s position on Roe v. Wade is a tragic betrayal of women across Maine and America.
“This vacancy has the potential to fundamentally change the landscape of women’s rights in America for generations – and her apparent attempt to treat it as if it is no different from those in the past is woefully ignorant of the stakes and is tremendous cause for concern.
“Senator Collins must oppose any nominee who is not in support of a woman’s right to choose or she will be complicit in surrendering women’s rights and moving our nation backwards.”
