Senator Collins laid the groundwork for the lawsuit that could eliminate coverage protections for people with preexisting conditions as millions lose their insurance

A new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 27 million Americans have lost their employer-sponsored health insurance amid the coronavirus crisis as Washington Republicans continue to plow forward with their lawsuit to overturn that Affordable Care Act.

Senator Susan Collins laid the groundwork for the lawsuit that now threatens to eliminate the ACA with her vote for the 2017 GOP tax bill. If the lawsuit is successful, it would end Medicaid expansion, which has covered more than 56,000 people in Maine. A Republican victory would also eliminate coverage protections for people with preexisting conditions and could lead to a more than 164% increase in the number of uninsured Mainers.

“The coronavirus pandemic has only made it more clear that every Mainer should have access to affordable health care,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Senator Collins voted to put our care at risk, and now her Republican allies in Washington are trying to terminate the ACA in the middle of a public health crisis that has likely caused tens of millions to lose their employer-sponsored insurance. Maine needs a Senator who fights to protect the ACA 100% of the time, not just when it’s politically convenient.”
