While Collins continues to refuse to tell the truth about her support for Trump, the president’s strongest allies are quietly investing in her reelection
Last week, Four More Years PAC, a group founded “to help re-elect President Trump,” launched a series of digital ads in support of Senator Susan Collins. But even as she’s receiving support from pro-Trump PACs, Trump Victory Staff are campaigning for her on the ground in Maine, and Donald Trump himself has said he’s “100%” behind her reelection, Collins has spent the last 597 days refusing to say whether she’ll vote to reelect the president.
While Collins has maintained that she can’t be honest about her presidential vote because she’s in a “difficult race,” Mainers know that Collins has been a crucial Trump ally in Washington, voting with him 94% of the time according to CQ. She voted to confirm every single one of Trump’s judicial nominees in the first two years of his presidency and helped pass the GOP tax giveaway that gave corporations and the wealthy billions in tax breaks. Collins even voted to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial after voting a dozen times to block key witnesses and evidence.
“It’s no mystery why Trump’s strongest supporters are throwing their weight behind Senator Collins’ reelection — they know that Trump counts on her vote in Washington,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Collins’ continued refusal to own up to her support for Trump is an obvious political calculation and last ditch attempt to save her reputation, but her voting record has already shown that she is no longer an independent voice that Mainers can count on.”
