Collins has received her absentee ballot to vote in the presidential election, but continues to dodge questions about who she’s supporting

With Election Day less than 48 hours away, Senator Susan Collins is sticking to the political calculation that she’s been banking on for the last 686 days: refusing to tell Mainers whether she’s voting for President Trump. She has her absentee ballot, and knows that Mainers around the state are planning to cast their votes on Tuesday, but she still has nothing to say to Mainers who want to know whether she supports the President for re-election.

Collins’ craven political calculation is based on the assumption that if Mainers knew who she’s actually voting for, her reelection prospects would be doomed. Unfortunately for her, all Mainers need to do is take a quick look at her record to get a clear picture of who she supports:

  • According to CQ, Senator Collins has voted with Trump 94% of the time.
     
  • Trump has said he’s “100%” behind Collins’ campaign and has said he hopes “she does well.”
     
  • Senator Collins has consistently helped shield Trump from accountability, including voting a dozen times to block witnesses and evidence before she voted to acquit him on all charges in the Senate impeachment trial.
     
  • Senator Collins has been a critical vote for Trump’s priorities in the Senate, from backing the GOP tax giveaway to corporations and the wealthy to voting to confirm every single one of his judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018.
     
  • Maine GOP Chair Demi Kouzounas has confirmed Collins and Trump “both support each other.”

“Instead of being brave enough to tell Mainers the truth about who she’s voting for, Susan Collins has cowered behind excuse after excuse for months,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Even though she clearly is not going to tell us who she’s voting for before the election, Mainers can see through her cowardly political games. They know that she has been an ardent supporter of this President’s policies, and that’s why they will vote to replace her on Tuesday.”
