Senator Collins must be practicing her dodgeball technique because she’s ducking questions about Donald Trump from journalists and everyday Mainers in rapid succession. Yesterday, when WMTW’s Phil Hirschkorn asked who she supported for president, she sidestepped the question and then this morning when a Maine Calling listener asked whether she believes Trump should be leading the country for the next four years, she straight up refused to answer the question.
Collins has been pretending for weeks that asking who she thinks should lead the country for the last four years is a shallow question that no real Mainers have asked her, but in reality Mainers all over the state want to know her position, and they’re hot on the trail of her bus tour to try and find out who she supports:
While no one has been able to get a straight answer from Collins on her support for Trump, her record is perfectly clear:
-
According to CQ, Senator Collins has voted with Trump 94% of the time.
-
Trump has said he’s “100%” behind Collins’ campaign and has said he hopes “she does well.”
-
Senator Collins has consistently helped shield Trump from accountability, including voting a dozen times to block witnesses and evidence before she voted to acquit him on all charges in the Senate impeachment trial.
- Senator Collins has been a critical vote for Trump’s priorities in the Senate, from backing the GOP tax giveaway to corporations and the wealthy to voting to confirm every single one of his judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018.
- Maine GOP Chair Demi Kouzounas has confirmed Collins and Trump “both support each other.”
