Westbrook, MAINE — In case you missed it, Democratic Representative Drew Gattine of Westbrook and Democratic Senator Cathy Breen of Falmouth penned an an op-ed in the Portland Press Herald today calling for the legislature to extend the current session so that it can finish work on several critical issues, like approving funding to address the opioid epidemic. House Republicans, led by Minority Leader and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Fredette, voted against extending the session, demanding instead rollbacks to the minimum wage increase.
“The current standstill is frustrating, but we know we can overcome it. These items should be noncontroversial. They address clear responsibilities of state government. They have support from both Democrats and Republicans. We’ll be in Augusta on Wednesday to consider vetoes, and we will have another opportunity to vote on a brief extension to allow us to finish the job you sent us here to do. We hope our colleagues agree,” wrote Rep. Gattine and Sen. Breen.
“Democrats are ready to work and we will support a prudent, comprehensive package that will grow and strengthen the middle class, while addressing the significant challenges facing our state. Let’s not lose this opportunity.”
