With just a few hours left until the Republican filing deadline, Mainers still don’t have an answer from Senator Susan Collins on whether or not she supports Donald Trump's reelection. Mainers have been asking Collins this question for weeks, and for weeks she has refused to answer.
“Senator Collins’ choice to continue to conceal her vote from Mainers is shameful,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “While Collins’ record of voting with Trump is instructive, her cowardice in the face of a simple question from her constituents is even more illuminating. By refusing to answer their questions, Senator Collins is denying Mainers the opportunity to know where she truly stands before they head to the polls. We deserve a Senator who will be honest with us.”
While Collins has stayed silent on her support for Trump, her actions continue to speak louder than ever:
1) According to CQ, Senator Collins voted with Donald Trump 94% of the time.
2) Senator Collins has been a key vote for Donald Trump on everything from the tax plan that gave corporations and the wealthy trillions in tax breaks to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh and every one of Trump’s judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018 -- even those “deemed unqualified by the American Bar Association.” She joined with Mitch McConnell to acquit Trump in the impeachment trial, after voting 12 times against including witnesses and evidence.
3) Donald Trump has said he's 100% behind Senator Collins' reelection.
4) Staffers for the president’s reelection campaign “worked to get her on the ballot” by collecting signatures door-to-door and at Trump events.
Mainers deserve answers and honesty from their senior senator. It’s long past time for Senator Collins to come clean about whether she voted for Trump.
