As Senator Collins travels the state in her new bus, she’s swerving to avoid answering questions about whether she’s voting for Donald Trump. Today, News Center Maine caught her latest dodge at a campaign stop in Bangor. For the last 626 days, Collins has repeatedly refused to answer this straightforward question. After having voted with Trump 94% of the time, she’s made a political calculation that she’ll have a better chance of getting reelected if she doesn’t own up to her support for the president.
Of course, Trump is “100%” behind Collins’ reelection because he knows he needs her vote in the Senate to advance his agenda and shield him from accountability. Senator Collins voted to confirm every single one of Trump’s judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018, cast a critical vote for the GOP tax bill, and acquitted the President in the impeachment trial after voting a dozen times to block key witnesses and evidence.
“As Senator Collins continues her sham bus tour, Mainers in every corner of the state are going to see for themselves that she doesn’t have the courage to be honest with us about her support for the president,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “We deserve a Senator who’s willing to tell us the truth, but Senator Collins has made the craven decision to keep Mainers in the dark for her own political gain.”
