Following news that 46 states, including Maine, received warnings that their voters could be disenfranchised by mail delays, Senator Mitch McConnell confirmed yesterday that he would not be calling the Senate back to vote on measures related to the Postal Service, telling reporters, “the post office is going to be just fine.”
Senator Susan Collins championed the legislation that led to the Postal Service’s current financial crisis, and now that Trump is taking advantage of the mess she created to try to dismantle an institution that Mainers rely on, her closest ally in the Senate is blocking efforts to fix it.
“Senator Collins spearheaded the effort to undermine the Postal Service, and now Mainers are paying the price,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “The rural communities in our state will be disproportionately impacted by the damage Trump inflicts on the USPS. We deserve a Senator who will fight to ensure every Mainer can count on the mail to get their prescriptions, their benefits, and their ballots on time.”
