Moody remains silent when asked about his position on the issue, just as he did after Governor LePage vetoed a bill that would have banned the discredited practice
Westbrook, MAINE - In case you missed it, Republican gubernatorial candidate Shawn Moody has refused to speak out against the LGBTQ conversion therapy bill vetoed by Governor Paul LePage earlier this year. In a Daily Beast story published today, Moody “did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast’s requests for comment.” Moody’s silence stands in stark contrast to Democratic gubernatorial nominee Janet Mills who has called conversion therapy a “reprehensible practice that has no medical merit” and has said she will sign a bill banning the practice into law as governor. After LePage’s veto in July, the Democratic National Committee criticized Moody for being “silent” on the issue.
Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett criticized Moody for his continued silence and for refusing to tell Mainers where he stands on the issue:
“Conversion therapy is wrong—plain and simple, and the fact that Shawn Moody can’t seem to find the courage to stand up and tell Mainers what he thinks about it leads me to believe that he, just like Governor LePage, thinks it’s okay. By not speaking out on this issue, Moody has sent a clear message that he doesn’t intend to stand up for Maine’s LGBTQ+ community as governor – unlike Janet Mills, who will ensure that all people are treated equally and with the dignity they deserve.”
This issue is also just another in a host that Moody has refused to speak out about. At various times, Shawn Moody has failed to answer questions on his positions regarding gun violence, Medicaid Expansion, and Ranked Choice Voting.
