Collins can’t stop contradicting her own absurd excuses for refusing to say whether she’s voting for Trump
Earlier this week, when pushed by CNN to explain her inconsistent excuses for refusing to be honest about her support for Donald Trump, Senator Susan Collins cited her “difficult race” as the reason she couldn’t answer this simple question.
Senator Collins herself has said that her 2008 reelection race was “certainly a very tough campaign” and has described her opponent at the time as “very formidable.” But during that difficult race, Collins didn’t hesitate to publicly proclaim her support for the Republican presidential nominee and even served as a co-chairwoman for the McCain campaign in Maine.
It’s obvious that Senator Collins’ evasive maneuvers to dodge questions about her support for Trump are based on nothing more than a craven political calculation. But no matter how many excuses she makes, Collins can’t change her record. Mainers know that she has been a key vote for Trump’s takeover of our federal courts, backed the GOP tax plan that gave away billions in tax breaks to corporate special interests, and voted to acquit the president in the impeachment trial after voting a dozen times against the inclusion of key witnesses and evidence. It’s no wonder that Trump has said he’s “100%” behind Collins’ reelection -- he knows he can count on her to get his agenda across the finish line, even when it’s bad for Maine.
“Susan Collins’ transparent political calculation isn’t fooling anyone -- her record of support for Trump speaks for itself,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Mainers deserve a Senator who will be honest about their positions on the important issues facing our state, but Collins has made it clear that she’ll only answer questions when it’s politically convenient.”
