In letters made public today, the US Postal Service warned Maine and 45 other states that their voters could be disenfranchised by delayed mail in ballots. This news comes as Trump has escalated his attacks on USPS with the help of a bill championed by Senator Susan Collins.

Earlier this week, Trump admitted that he’s blocking funding for the Postal Service to try to prevent people voting by mail, and his attacks are already having serious consequences for Maine. According to Secretary of State Matt Dunlap, the new guidance from the USPS that voters need to return their ballots at least 15 days before election day represents “a real reversal” for the agency.

“In the midst of an ongoing pandemic, this attack on vote by mail is a threat to our democracy,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “No Mainer should have to risk their health to ensure their vote is counted but Trump and Collins’ continued assaults on the USPS pose a serious threat to our right to vote safely.”
