As Paul LePage begins to ramp up his campaign and push lie after lie about his own policies and Governor Mills’ record, Mainers are seeing through it. This week, letter writers around the state made clear that they remember the disasters of Paul LePage’s eight years in office, and aren’t eager to go back:
Peter Shaw, Falmouth: Paul LePage, is responsible for having ruined the lives of thousands of our citizens when, as governor, he refused to expand Medicaid in our state after voters approved it at the ballot box…It took the actions of the new governor, Mills, to expand Medicaid and provide health services to thousands.
Crystal Ward, Lewiston: In 2011 Gov. Paul LePage and state Treasurer Bruce Poliquin led the charge to lower pensions received by retired people in MainePERS. LePage, Poliquin and Republicans cut, capped and froze the earned benefits…LePage and Poliquin aren’t friends of retirees.
Deanne Danforth, Wilton: “Paul LePage is attacking Gov. Janet Mills with false rhetoric about the Shawmut Dam and Sappi mill…LePage said he makes up stories to mislead the media. LePage admitted he creates fake news. Now he’s spreading fake news about Gov. Mills.”
Gregory Greenleaf, Harpswell: I like to read works of horror in bed, especially good ones that make me pull up the covers over my head. Right now, I’m reading a spine-tingling story I can’t put aside — even though it’s giving me nightmares. It’s called “The Maine GOP 2022 Platform.”
Mainers also expressed gratitude for Governor Mills’ accomplishments and leadership since taking over from LePage:
Jack Comart, Readfield: Voting for Janet Mills is a no-brainer. Low unemployment, huge increases in the state’s rainy day fund, two years of free community college, $850 rebate checks, funding increases for our schools, big steps toward a green economy, steady management during the COVID-19 crisis. A respectful and humane approach to issues. Why bring back the meanness and the yelling?
Mary Ann Larson, Cumberland: Maine is emerging as a climate leader, and a great deal of the credit goes to Mills for this reality.
Joe Mailey, Auburn: [Governor Mills’] policies have put Maine in a very good place financially. She has shown that she can govern without all of the drama, name calling, and bombastic attacks on anyone opposed to her. In other words, she has been a leader during some trying times.
