Senator Susan Collins is at it again, taking credit for coronavirus relief that she obstructed in the Senate. In reality, Collins fought to push through an inadequate version of the CARES Act that did not include the $150 billion for state and local governments that Senate Democrats later secured in negotiations.

On top of that, when Senate Democrats pushed to include additional funding for state and local governments in the most recent coronavirus package, Senate Republicans refused. Collins even called the negotiations “disgraceful.” Now, Mitch McConnell has suggested that states like Maine go into bankruptcy rather than Congress providing more federal support.

“The truth is that if Senator Collins had gotten her way, there would have been no support for state and local governments included in the CARES Act,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Throughout this crisis, she has repeatedly obstructed and undermined efforts to secure support for our hospitals, our workers, and the state and local governments that are doing more to protect our communities in this crisis than Trump’s dysfunctional federal response. If Senator Collins wants to take credit for fighting for Maine, she should actually start fighting for what Mainers need.”
