Thanks to the support of Senator Collins, Mitch McConnell announced yesterday that he has the votes to move forward with the Senate impeachment trial procedures without any witnesses.
Despite Collins’ own assertion during the 1999 impeachment trial that she needed “witnesses and further evidence” “to get to the truth,” she is now backing the McConnell framework that would allow the trial to proceed without testimony from key witnesses like former White House national security advisor John Bolton and critical documents and other evidence that the public deserves to see.
When pressed by reporters on her support for the McConnell cover-up, Collins complained about Democrats campaigning against her... even though the Senator herself has criticized other Senators for “not giving the appearance of and the reality of judging this in an impartial way.”
“Senator Collins’s refusal to commit to securing a fair process with witnesses and evidence has squandered her credibility as an impartial juror in this process,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “Her behavior is inconsistent with the standard she set 20 years ago on the last impeachment trial, and her self-serving support for Mitch McConnell’s cover-up will be a stain on her record that Mainers will not forget.”
