Senator Collins failed to secure aid for state and local governments, then “seemed to back” Trump plan that would cost Maine an additional $8 million per week

As negotiations over coronavirus aid remain stalled in Washington, Senator Susan Collins has “retreated to her partisan corner” and “suggested that the president’s power grab" -- that would “blow a hole in Social Security and Medicare’s finances” and increase the burden on state governments at a time when Maine is already facing a $1.4 billion shortfall -- “could be just what the negotiations need."

Senator Collins already failed to secure even a single dollar of support for state and local governments in her party’s coronavirus aid proposal. And over the weekend, Collins “seemed to back” the president’s actions that state agencies now say would cost Maine $8 million per week, . While Collins continues to play the blame game, Maine voices are calling on her to stop delaying and “get serious” about addressing the crisis facing families in Maine and across the country.

“Maine needs more federal support now, but instead of fighting to secure the funding our state needs, Senator Collins is enabling Trump’s reckless scheme to plunge us further into debt,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “We deserve a Senator who will get to work to ensure Maine towns can continue to provide essential services through these twin public health and economic crises. After 24 years in Washington, Collins has made it clear that she’s no longer up to the task.”
