Augusta, MAINE – With the U.S House of Representatives poised to take a final vote on the Republican tax bill today, Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett released a statement calling on Maine’s Republican gubernatorial candidates to tell the people of Maine their position on the bill:

“The Republicans in Congress are about to ram through a massive restructuring of the tax code that would result in greater economic inequality, a massive hole in the deficit, and higher health costs. Meanwhile, Maine’s Republican candidates for Governor haven’t made a peep publicly about the bill, which will impact every person across the state.

“Do Mary Mayhew, Shawn Moody, Ken Fredette, Mike Thibodeau, and Garrett Mason agree with Governor LePage that exploding the deficit to give huge tax breaks to the wealthiest with marginal benefits for the middle-class is the best way to go?

“Or do they believe, like Maine Democrats and a majority of economists and independent experts, that tax reform should be focused on supporting hardworking, middle-class Mainers as the best way to improve prosperity and grow our economy?

“Serving effectively as Maine’s Governor requires leadership – and leadership begins with telling the people of our state where they stand on critical issues. Mainers deserve nothing less.”
