Augusta, MAINE – Maine’s leading lawmakers, including the state’s entire congressional delegation, are pushing back against President Trump’s vulgar comments referring to Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations as "shithole" countries.
Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett called on Governor LePage and the Republican candidates for Governor, who have thus far been silent, to condemn the President’s remarks:
“The President’s comments are divisive, racist, and entirely counter to the values of our nation. We know Governor LePage is infamous himself for this type of shameful behavior, but if he and the Republicans gubernatorial candidate don’t speak out against these inappropriate remarks, they will be sending a clear message to the people of Maine that they are prepared to allow leaders to embarrass our state and nation in the years to come.
"We hope that Republican leaders across the state will step up to condemn his remarks without hesitation.”
Maine’s entire congressional delegation spoke out against the President’s remarks, although it's worth noting that, while it's great Congressman Poliquin didn't hide in a bathroom, his response is weak at best:
Senator Susan Collins: “These comments are highly inappropriate & out of bounds and could hurt efforts for a bipartisan immigration agreement. The President should not denigrate other countries.”
Senator Angus King: “Truly regrettable and inconsistent with my understanding of what America is all about.”
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree: “President Trump’s racist immigration comments about immigrants are absolutely sickening, even for him. It’s frightening to have someone in the White House with this kind of ignorance and lack of compassion.”
Congressman Bruce Poliquin: “I am focused on policy. When it comes to immigration reform and securing our borders, we have urgent and serious needs to address and many critical policies to debate. The reported comments are not helpful.”
