Waterville, MAINE -- Maine Democrats issued the following statements today in response to Waterville residents announcing that they are launching an effort to recall Republican Mayor Nick Isgro after he told Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg to “eat it”:

“David Hogg has demonstrated courage and a willingness to stand up to bullies,” said Claude Francke, Chairman of the Waterville Democratic Committee. “Such actions exemplify the American spirit and should not be treated disrespectfully.”

“Waterville deserves a mayor who respects all of its citizens, and Nick Isgro has shown that he is not that mayor,” said Mike Emery, Chairman of the Kennebec County Democratic Committee. “We support this effort by Waterville residents to restore dignity to the office of the Mayor of Waterville.”

“Today, the citizens of Waterville stood up to say that Mayor Isgro’s comments do not reflect the values of their city and that the people of Waterville deserve better,” said Phil Bartlett, Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party. “Their commitment to ensuring that Waterville is a respectful, inclusive community is an example for us all.”
