Westbrook, MAINE -- The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) announced yesterday that health insurance premiums will rise a projected 15 percent and that three million more Americans will lose health coverage after Republican Congressman Bruce Poliquin, Speaker Paul Ryan, and the GOP passed a corporate tax cut bill that sabotaged the foundation of the Affordable Care Act.

The CBO’s projection falls in line with that of the Center for American Progress which also recently estimated that Maine people will face a 15.90 percent increase, meaning that Mainers will pay $1,200 more for health insurance than they’re paying now.

“The non-partisan CBO confirmed what Democrats warned of: that sabotaging the Affordable Care Act to give tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy will hurt hard-working Americans,” said Phil Bartlett, Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party. “But apparently that didn’t matter enough to Congressman Poliquin and the Republicans in Congress -- and now, as a direct result of their actions, Mainers are going to have to shell out more money for health care. The Congressman has failed to defend the interests of the people he claims to represent, and the only way to fix that is by sending a Democrat to Congress who will stand up for affordable, accessible health care - unlike Bruce Poliquin.”
