Westbrook, MAINE - Maine Democrats showed up in huge numbers last night to vote, far exceeding the turnout of Republicans who went to the polls. As of 11:30 a.m. this morning, with nearly 83 percent of precincts reporting, 112,846 Democrats turned out to vote in the 2018 gubernatorial primary, while only 81,472 votes Republicans did, a difference of more than 30,000. This is in stark contrast to the the last open gubernatorial primary in 2010, which saw Republicans cast nearly 10,000 more ballots than Democrats. The turnout numbers so far from last night are a clear sign that after nearly eight years of Paul LePage, Democrats are ready for a change and will vote to make sure it happens.
“Last night’s huge Democratic turnout proves that momentum is on our side,” said Phil Bartlett, Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party. “After nearly eight years of Governor LePage’s divisive leadership and failed policies, Maine Democrats turned out in massive numbers to show that they are tired with the same failed leadership, and that they’re ready for a new, better direction. We look forward to continuing to work hard in the months ahead and carrying this strong momentum forward so that our nominees can give Maine people the change they deserve after eight long years.”
