Westbrook, MAINE – Maine is getting hammered by climate change, but it’s no big deal to Republican gubernatorial candidate Shawn Moody. “It is important not to overreact” is the message he sent last night to a crowd of fishermen gathered at a forum in Rockland.

That’s right—Moody told Maine fishermen not to overreact to climate change. Moody also added that government shouldn’t “get in the way,” according to a news report.

“Climate change is a serious threat to Maine’s environment, our fishing industries, and the thousands of Mainers that they employ,” said Phil Bartlett, Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party. “Telling Mainers—especially our fisherman—not to overreact to an issue that will significantly affect their livelihoods just shows how out of touch Shawn Moody is. How can Maine people rely on Shawn Moody to address this serious issue when he won’t even acknowledge the scientific facts behind it?”

Moody’s comments come after he denied earlier this year that human activities are contributing to climate change. Moody’s views are sharply out of line with the scientific consensus that humans are causing and accelerating the impacts of climate change. Laughably, all of this comes after Moody said that he makes decisions on “data, facts, and reality”.

Meanwhile, the Gulf of Maine is among the fastest warming bodies of water in the world, and a report in the Portland Press Herald recently showed that Maine’s fisheries and the thousands of people they employ are deeply threatened by it.
