A new report reveals President Trump has diverted $2.5 million intended to improve and maintain national parks across the country – like Acadia – for his increasingly partisan Fourth of July event in Washington, D.C. The decision could jeopardize Acadia National Park and Maine's other national parks, which is an economic boon that has generated more than $571 million in economic benefits and has brought some 3.5 million visitors. Senator Susan Collins has not commented on the report.
“President Trump is jeopardizing funding for national parks that could have a direct impact on Mainers and Senator Collins is nowhere to be found,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Maine’s national parks are both an economic boon and national treasure that people from all over the world come to see, why hasn’t Senator Collins’ demanded President Trump to reverse the decision and keep the National Parks funding intact?”
Senator Collins has voted with President Trump more than she has with any other president she served with in her 22 years in the Senate. Earlier this year, the League of Conservation Voters issued its worst consecutive scorecard ever for Senator Collins, who took more money from the Texas oil & gas industry than from all of Maine in the first fundraising quarter this year.
