“If this is Susan’s standard for independent, patriotic service in Congress, it is time for us to elect a new senator”
“We need a senator that will stand up for accountability in government and not just wring her hands.”
Ahead of Trump’s visit to the state this week, Maine people have been calling out Senator Susan Collins for her refusal to hold Trump accountable. Letter writers to papers across Maine shared their frustration with Collins’ support for unqualified nominees, her failure to demand accountability for the firing of inspectors general, and her deference to Trump.
In letter after letter, voters are making it clear that Collins has let them down and they’re ready to elect a new senator who will put Maine people first.

Portland Press Herald: Michael Thompson: Susan Collins has left Mainers behind
Sen. Susan Collins has been a good steward for Maine in the past, but in the last three years that shepherding and moderation have given way to an increasing acquiescence to an ever-more-extreme reckless Republican agenda, and deference to a president who seems more and more to be nothing more then a power-grabbing huckster. Because of this hard right turn of Collins’ Republican Party, she was apparently forced to choose: to follow her party’s lead in order to maintain their support and those votes, or she could have chosen to stick to principles and abandon this extreme positioning, and even her party if necessary.
Boothbay Register: Bill Hammond: Say it ain’t so, Susan
She’s done it again — voted to enable Trump’s subversion of the executive branch. In the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing for John Ratcliffe, Susan Collins pitched him a softball question, then voted to send his name along for confirmation as Director of National Intelligence. [...] If this is Susan’s standard for independent, patriotic service in Congress, it is time for us to elect a new senator to work with Angus King for Maine and for our beleaguered democracy.
Bangor Daily News: Nils Tcheyan: Collins’ empty rhetoric
Despite being a coauthor of 2008 legislation that prohibits the firing of inspector generals by the president without a valid reason, I believe Collins fails to demand meaningful accountability for these firings, or to join with others including Sen. Mitt Romney to strongly condemn the actions. I believe her legacy will be a record of empty rhetoric followed by a failure to make a difference when she can through her votes as our senator. We need a senator that will stand up for accountability in government and not just wring her hands.
Portland Press Herald: Jack Glatter: Lack of judgement reflects poorly on Collins
Sen. Susan Collins’ lack of judgment on partisan matters far outweighs any of the bipartisanship that she touts in her TV ads. She was taken in by the promises of Attorney General William Barr and National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe that they would show legal impartiality, and her belief and hope that impeachment would be enough to rein in the president from acting in ways harmful to the nation show that she too is complicit, or at least making wrong decisions.
