Today, Senator Susan Collins once again dodged the press in Washington, DC when asked to comment on Trump’s baseless conspiracy theory about a 75 year old victim of police violence.
Collins’ latest refusal to condemn Trump comes amid reports that Mitch McConnell told Senate Republicans not to abandon the president, warning them that it could cost them in November. Collins has been sticking to McConnell’s playbook on this for months by defending Trump’s early response to the coronavirus crisis, claiming the president “learned a pretty big lesson” from his impeachment trial, and refusing to even say whether she’s supporting his reelection for the last 541 days. When former Defense Secretary Mattis denounced the tear-gassing of peaceful protestors so Trump could get a photo op, Collins told reporters, “I don’t really have anything more to add.”
“Senator Collins’ continued refusal to hold Trump accountable is a profile in cowardice,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “Collins has made it very clear that she is more interested in placating a dangerous and vindictive president than in doing what’s right for our state. Maine people deserve better.”
