Collins Used False Justification To Continue To Dodge On Her Support For Trump
Senator Collins has now refused to say whether she’s supporting Trump’s reelection for 579 days, and this week she rolled out a brand new excuse for why she won’t be honest with Mainers about this question, the problem is -- it wasn’t true.
When a reporter pointed out that she was very publicly involved in presidential politics in 2016, Collins said that was because she “wasn’t up for reelection.” But Collins has gotten involved in presidential politics when she was up for reelection in the past, serving as a campaign co-chairwoman for John McCain in 2008.
ACA Lawsuit Caused By Collins Threatens To Double Uninsured Rate In Maine
Though Collins continues to try to distance herself from the Republican lawsuit to strike down the Affordable Care Act, she can’t shake the fact that her vote for the 2017 GOP tax giveaway made the lawsuit possible in the first place. And with Maine’s uninsured rate already on the rise due to COVID-19, Collins has maintained that she doesn’t regret her vote for the tax bill “at all” as her Republican colleagues use it to try to strip health care coverage from tens of thousands of Mainers.
HRC Abandons Collins, Endorses Sara Gideon
The Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ rights advocacy organization in the country, had previously endorsed Susan Collins in every election since 2002. But on Wednesday, they endorsed Sara Gideon, citing Collins’ consistent support for Trump and McConnell’s agenda as the reason she lost their backing.
