Yesterday, President Donald Trump gave credence to a “false and racist conspiracy theory” about vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, building on his record of promoting similar conspiracy theories about President Barack Obama for years.
In the face of this shameful return to one of Trump’s ugliest instincts, Senator Susan Collins is continuing her 607 day streak of refusing to tell Mainers whether she supports his reelection.
While Collins has remained unable to summon the courage to tell the truth about her support for Trump, Mainers know that she has been a key vote for Trump’s agenda in Washington. According to CQ, she voted with him 94% of the time, including voting to confirm every single one of Trump’s judicial nominees in the first two years of his presidency and helping to pass the GOP tax giveaway that gave corporations and the wealthy billions in tax breaks.
“Mainers deserve to know whether our senior senator is voting to reelect a president who routinely spouts racist conspiracy theories, but Senator Collins has made a political calculation that she’s better off keeping us in the dark,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “After nearly four years of supporting the president's agenda, Collins owes Mainers the truth--is she voting for Trump?”
