Following a report in The Atlantic detailing Donald Trump’s disparagement of fallen American heroes, and confirmation of that report in The Associated Press, Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra released the following statement:
“As the spouse of a combat veteran, I am appalled by the contempt that Donald Trump has for the men and women who gave their lives to defend our freedoms. Our veterans and those who died serving this country are not ‘losers’ or ‘suckers’ — they deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
“Senator Susan Collins has enabled Trump every step of the way and now she’s silent in the face of his disrespect and disregard for the dignity and safety of American servicemembers. She has abdicated her responsibility to hold this president accountable for the sake of her own political convenience time and again. These despicable comments cannot go unchallenged, and Senator Collins should be able to answer if she thinks this is who should be leading our country.”
