Collins is still refusing to tell Mainers the truth about her support for Donald Trump, despite the fact that she’s already requested her absentee ballot

Maine has a proud tradition of leaders who aren’t afraid to tell the truth. Dating all the way back to 1996, every one of Maine’s U.S. Senators have taken a public position in every single presidential contest—until now. This year, even though she’s already requested her absentee ballot to vote in the presidential election, Senator Susan Collins is still refusing to answer questions about her support for Donald Trump.

Unlike every other Maine Senator in the last three decades, Senator Collins has decided it’s okay to not tell Mainers the truth because she’s made a craven political calculation that her odds of reelection are better if Mainers don’t know who she’s voting for. But all Mainers need to do is take a look at her record to know that Senator Collins is all-in on Trump:

  • Senator Collins has consistently helped shield Trump from accountability, including voting a dozen times to block witnesses and evidence before she voted to acquit him on all charges in the Senate impeachment trial.

“From Senator George Mitchell, to Senators Bill Cohen, Olympia Snowe, and Angus King, Maine’s leaders have never had trouble being honest about who they think should be leading the country, but Senator Collins doesn’t have the courage to tell us who she’s voting for this year,” said Maine Demcoratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “Collins’ craven political decision to conceal her support for Donald Trump shows us just how much she’s changed. After 24 years in Washington she doesn’t think she has to be accountable to Mainers anymore.”
