This year, Donald Trump has gassed peaceful protesters, encouraged his supporters to intimidate voters at polling places, and refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power if he loses the election, but through it all, Senator Susan Collins has refused to say whether she’s voting to reelect him.
In 2016, Collins was singing a different tune. She specifically cited Trump’s temperament and lack of self restraint as reasons she could not vote for him. But now that Trump’s inciting words are coming directly from the Oval Office, she is refusing to condemn him.
Donald Trump hasn’t changed — but Susan Collins has.
Senator Collins has boasted that her decision to publicly announce that she would not vote for Trump in 2016 was “courageous” but now she doesn’t have the courage to tell Mainers the truth about who she’s supporting to lead the country for the next four years. Mainers haven’t forgotten Collins’ votes to confirm 181 Trump nominated judges or her key vote for the GOP tax bill that put the Affordable Care Act in jeopardy, but for the last 668 days she has dodged questions about who she’s voting for in a desperate attempt to conceal her record of support for Trump.
