Maine Democratic State Committee to elect new leadership on January 24

Today, Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra and Vice Chair Erik Gundersen formally announced they will not seek re-election to their posts at the end of their terms. Marra first made the announcement at a November meeting of the Maine Democratic State Committee, the governing body of the Maine Democratic Party. The Democratic State Committee will meet Sunday, January 24 to elect a new chair and vice chair, as well as other leadership and committee positions.

“I am incredibly grateful for the trust placed in me to serve as chair, and I wouldn’t trade my time leading the Maine Democratic Party for anything,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Over the last two years, we built the largest grassroots operations we’ve ever had. We made hundreds of thousands of phone calls, knocked doors, and talked to our friends and families about what a better future for our state would look like. And even though we came up short in the Senate race, we’ve built a solid foundation to make progress for years to come and I’m proud of what we achieved together.”

“I’m confident that the party is in an even better position to elect Democrats up and down the ballot from the lessons we learned,” Marra continued. “It’s been an honor to serve as chair, and I want to thank my staff, our county and municipal chairs, and the hundreds of volunteers who made this the best job in the world.”

“Together, we delivered Maine for President-elect Joe Biden, re-elected Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and Congressman Jared Golden, held our majorities in the Maine House and Senate, and won many important municipal elections. I’m proud of all that we accomplished,” said Maine Democratic Party Vice Chair Erik Gundersen. “It’s been an honor to serve as vice chair, and I’m confident that along with our hardworking staff, new leadership will continue to build on all the crucial work we did this cycle.”
