In case you missed it, a new report from the Maine Monitor points out a fatal flaw in Paul LePage’s plan to temporarily suspend “all taxes that were put in place since the pandemic”-- there are none to suspend.
According to the report, “Maine has not introduced new taxes since the pandemic began, according to the state and a review of the Legislative Taxation Committee bills from 2020 to 2022.” LePage’s response was even panned by Republicans, with Assistant Senate Minority Leader Matt Pouliot, R-August, saying he could not think of any recent tax or fee increases worth suspending.
The report also highlights how Governor Mills has not raised taxes and has signed a number of new tax breaks into law. She has also provided $850 in bipartisan inflation relief checks to most Mainers, one of the strongest inflation relief measures in the country, which LePage opposes.
