Starting Tuesday, October 27, some Maine towns and cities will begin processing absentee ballots early. During the week before Election Day, clerks open absentee return envelopes and put the ballots into the ballot box or tabulator, instead of waiting until November 3. Maine law allows this, and it allows the public to watch (21-A M.R.S. § 760-B).
Early Processing Observers are the eyes and ears of the Voter Access Team at these sessions. Your job is simple: watch, take notes, and tell us what you saw. You help make sure every eligible voter’s absentee ballot is handled correctly and counted.
The training takes about 30 minutes. Every session covers the same material, so you only need to attend one.
