In Lewiston, Maine Seniors Slam Susan Collins For Weakening Social Security, Enabling Health Care Cuts

Lewiston, ME – Today in Lewiston, Maine seniors slammed Susan Collins for her votes to weaken Social Security, reduce health care access, and hike costs across the board.

“[Susan Collins has] had 30 years to get to know what’s best for seniors in Auburn,” said Ned Claxton of Auburn. “She knows that Maine is one of the oldest states in the Union, and that we have the highest percentage of seniors who depend on Social Security checks. You’d think she’d be working really hard to make Social Security secure. That hasn’t been the case.”

“As seniors, we don’t have a monopoly on the need for healthcare, though we do have a disproportionate share of it,” said Elaine Makas of Lewiston. “Votes to cut Medicare, to advance legislation that would cut it, or to reduce access to nearby, affordable healthcare will cause pain and extra headaches that we definitely don’t need. We need a senator who will fight for us, not someone who will fight against us for her wealthy donors.”

Susan Collins has repeatedly voted to weaken and privatize Social Security and has even been honored by an anti-AARP group.

  • Collins provided a “key” and “pivotal” vote in advancing the toxic Republican plan they admit is a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security.”

  • Susan Collins has a record of voting to “weaken Social Security” in Congress.

  • Susan Collins voted against multiple amendments that would have reined in DOGE and protected Social Security benefits from cuts.

  • Ahead of DOGE cuts that attacked Social Security and jeopardized benefits, Susan Collins met with Elon Musk and said she was “very impressed” with his plans.

  • This year, Collins has endorsed gubernatorial candidate Bobby Charles, a right-wing radical and former lobbyist for a group that wants to raise the Social Security retirement age.

Susan Collins has made it harder and more expensive for seniors to access their health care

  • For decades, Collins has been a reliable vote to cut Medicare, and voted at least a dozen times to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act, which saved Maine seniors more than $87 million by closing a coverage gap in Medicare, expanded coverage for tens of thousands, and overall reduced costs while increasing access to care.

  • Collins also has a long “record of voting against lower drug prices,” including her vote against the Inflation Reduction Act which lowered the cost of prescription drugs – including capping the price on insulin at $35 per month for people on Medicare

  • As she’s voted against lowering the costs of health insurance and prescription drugs, Collins has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from major insurers and Big Pharma

  • And her vote to advance the One Big Beautiful Bill has led to the closure of multiple rural hospital units, which disproportionately provide care to seniors.

Susan Collins’ has stood alongside Donald Trump as his reckless tariffs and the Iran War have hiked costs, with a disproportionate impact on seniors who rely on a fixed income.

  • Collins voted five times against resolutions that could have ended the Iran War. Meanwhile, Collins’ stock portfolio has surged – she and her husband hold up to $115,000 in natural gas stocks, which have potentially raked in thousands more for the couple since the war began.

  • Collins has voted with Trump 96% of the time.
