Augusta, Maine — In a sitdown interview with Maine Newsroom, Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Bobby Charles doubled down on his belief that as governor, he would sit down with pregnant women to convince them to not have an abortion.
Charles first made this statement in an interview with the Christian Civic League and doubled down in a press conference responding to his sister, Anita Charles, speaking out against his candidacy.
For Maine Newsroom, Charles said:
“But if I were asked, will you sit down and have a conversation with me about whether or not this is the right choice for me, we would have a broad-ranging discussion. And we would talk about the long-term consequences of that child and what the greatness and goodness is of parenting. You’re a parent, I’m a parent. I think unfortunately a lot of decisions are made in the modern world, including that decision, without serious deep conversation.”
Statement from Maine Democratic Party Spokesperson Lauryn Fanguen:
“Bobby Charles is an over-zealous anti-choice extremist who wants to talk to women about their personal health care decisions. There’s no room for politicians in a doctor’s office and no room for Bobby Charles in the Blaine House.”
