NEW REPORT: Senator Collins delivers… for the wealthy [Maine Center for Economic Policy]

Augusta, ME – Susan Collins has delivered $2.6 trillion in tax cuts for the top 1% during her 30 years in the Senate, according to a new report from the Maine Center for Economic Policy. According to the report, on Senator Collins’ watch, for every $1 in tax cuts sent to the top 5% of the country, the bottom 60% got 4 cents.

In response to the new report, Misha Linnehan, spokesperson for the Maine Democratic Party, released the following statement:

“Elon Musk and Trump’s other billionaire backers have flooded Susan Collins’ reelection effort with campaign with cash, and this report shows why – she’s been delivering them tax cuts for 30 years. Mainers deserve a Senator who delivers for them, not one who pays them lip service while steering trillions of dollars to the richest people in the country.”

Maine Center for Economic Policy: Senator Collins delivers… for the wealthy

  • In nearly 30 years in the Senate, Susan Collins helped pass legislation that gave $2.6 trillion in tax cuts to the top 1%. […]

  • Since 1997, her votes have helped reduce taxes on high incomes, investment profits, corporate earnings, and inherited fortunes. The result has been a tax system that asks less of those with the greatest ability to pay, even as working Mainers struggle with rising costs and stagnant wages. […]

  • Collins has supported major tax-cut legislation throughout her Senate career, including both rounds of Bush tax cuts and the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Unlike Senator Olympia Snowe who voted against the second Bush tax cut bill because of how it grew the debt. She also supported legislation that reduced taxes on investment gains and wealthy estates.

  • Her record on President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” is particularly revealing.

  • Collins ultimately voted against the bill’s final passage, but she voted to advance it on a key procedural vote that passed 51–49, helping clear the way for its enactment. Other Republican senators who opposed the final bill also opposed advancing it. Collins chose differently. A vote against final passage does not erase a vote that helped put the legislation on the path to becoming law.

  • The bill’s benefits and costs are not evenly distributed — the wealthy receive enormous tax advantages, while working families face the consequences of reduced public revenue and the administration’s decisions about what to fund and what to cut. Collins has had nearly three decades to demonstrate that her economic priorities deliver for ordinary Mainers. Yet the record shows a consistent pattern: tax cuts that disproportionately reward wealth, paired with arguments that the country cannot afford the investments working people need. […]

  • Collins and Trump want Mainers to believe we can’t afford to do more for working families. But their own choices tell a different story. The government has found room for enormous tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires, and large corporations — while investments in working people keep taking a back seat to giveaways at the top.
