Augusta, Maine —  Republican nominee for governor Bobby Charles has spent the past year enthusiastically backing Donald Trump’s cost-raising tariffs – and championing his disastrous economic agenda.

Now, as tariffs continue to raise costs on Maine workers and families, Charles is scrambling to rewrite his own record. But Mainers don’t have to take his word for it, they can look at what Charles actually said.

In February, Charles enthusiastically defended Trump’s tariffs, which included tariffs on Canada. The Trump tariffs led to a nearly 20% decline in Maine exports to Canada. After the courts struck down the tariffs, Charles blasted the decision, declaring that “the U.S. Supreme Court got it wrong.”

Now, with Trump’s tariffs driving up costs and becoming a political liability, Charles is trying to claim he disagrees with the president.
