Augusta, Maine — Tonight, GOP gubernatorial candidates once again doubled down on their plans to kick Mainers off of MaineCare. Garrett Mason, Jonathan Bush, and Bobby Charles were elated to debate how many Mainers they would strip of health care coverage.
Mason said he would repeal the latest MaineCare expansion, which gave approximately 100,000 Mainers access to health care. When pushed by NEWS CENTER Maine’s Phil Hirschkorn on whether that meant he wanted to kick 100,000 Mainers off their health care, Mason responded: “That would be the goal.”
Bush once again declared that he wants to “shred” MaineCare.
Charles added that he plans to slash enrollment through imposing burdensome red tape.
Lauryn Fanguen, spokesperson for the Maine Democratic Party, released the following statement:
“Republicans are shameless about their plan to cut MaineCare. They’re proudly pushing an extreme, unpopular MAGA agenda that would rip health care away from Mainers just trying to see a doctor, afford prescriptions, and get basic care for their families.”
Reminder: All of these candidates have repeatedly discussed cutting MaineCare throughout their campaigns. Garrett Mason repeatedly voted against MaineCare expansion and recently said adults with no children should not have MaineCare. Jonathan Bush wants to use AI to kick Mainers off of MaineCare, said working Mainers shouldn’t be on MaineCare, and compared MaineCare expansion to Putin bombing schools.
