Augusta, Maine — Today, Bobby Charles won the Republican gubernatorial primary. Devon Murphy-Anderson, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party, released the following statement:
“Bobby Charles is a Donald Trump minion who wants to bring the MAGA agenda to Maine. Charles’ dangerous agenda, which includes an unrealistic state budget proposal, kicking Mainers off of MaineCare, rolling back abortion rights, and rubber stamping the Trump economy that has led to higher grocery, electricity, gas, and health care costs, are out of touch with Maine families. Charles is a far-right extremist who doesn’t stand a chance at the ballot box this November.”
What you need to know about Bobby Charles:
- Charles sides with Trump and MAGA over Mainers: Bobby Charles eagerly supports Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, his war in Iran, and Trump’s tariffs despite the unequivocal harm these policies are having on Maine families. These have led to higher gas prices, health care premiums, and electricity and groceries costs.
- Charles wants to kick Mainers off of MaineCare: Bobby Charles wants to slash enrollment through imposing burdensome red tape. Nearly 400,000 Mainers rely on MaineCare for their insurance and 84% of Mainers disagree with Bobby Charles’ agenda to roll back MaineCare eligibility.
- Charles is an anti-abortion extremist: Bobby Charles says abortion is “abhorrent.” He’s “unapologetically pro-life,” promised to roll back abortion rights in Maine, and celebrated the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v Wade.
- Even Republicans say his fiscal policies don’t make sense: Republican primary contenders like Garrett Mason, Jonathan Bush, David Jones, and Ben Midgley went after his plan to create budgetary chaos. They rightfully called Charles’ budget cut proposal unreasonable and said its cuts would cause massive economic chaos and deep cuts to basic things like roads and bridges and public education.
