Maine Democrats See Strong Momentum with Unenrolled Voters in Open Primary

Unenrolled early and absentee voters chose to vote in the Democratic primary at three times the rate of the Republican primary

AUGUSTA, Maine — Early data on absentee and early in-person ballots shows unenrolled voters broke sharply toward Democrats.

Data compiled by the Maine Democratic Party shows that unenrolled voters who cast early ballots — by mail or in-person absentee — participated in the Democratic primary at roughly three times the rate of the Republican primary.

The numbers will continue to update as final returns are tallied, but the directional trend is clear: when given the opportunity to participate, Maine’s unenrolled voters are engaging with the Democratic Party at a significantly higher rate.

“This is an important moment for Maine voters. This year, the door is open for unenrolled Mainers to participate in our primary process – and they’re walking through it and choosing Democrats. That’s not an accident. It reflects the strength of our candidates and the fact that we are the Party fighting for Maine’s working families, not billionaires.”
