Augusta, Maine — Maine Democrats have spent months warning that Bobby Charles is too extreme, out of touch, and unprepared to be Maine’s governor.
Turns out, Republicans also agree.
During the Republican primary, Charles’ own opponents repeatedly accused him of being dishonest, unrealistic, and flat-out unready for the job. During one debate, candidates wouldn’t even commit to supporting him if he won the nomination.
When your own party is waving the warning signs, Mainers should pay attention.
Here’s what Republicans had to say:
Assistant Maine Senate Minority Leader Matt Harrington
- “Bobby has a lot of criticism coming to him… He seems willing to jump on any hand grenade to win this primary, with no regard to what it’s going to do to his chances in the general.” [Bangor Daily News]
Jonathan Bush
- “There’s only one candidate that has not been honest about who he is, and that’s Bobby Charles.” [News Center Maine]
- “25-year DC lobbyist Bobby Charles continues to lie.” [FOX News]
- “Bobby Charles said he’s going to cut $4 billion of taxes because he hasn’t run anything before. He can make those kinds of lavish promises without having to deliver… Ain’t no way you’re going to take $4 billion out of a $6 billion revenue stream.” [Republican Gubernatorial Debate]
David Jones
- On ranking everyone else but Bobby Charles: “I just can’t bring myself to do it.” [News Center Maine]
- “Bobby Charles and his team are clearly not ready for primetime. If you don’t know the difference between Medicare and MaineCare, this job is not for you.” [The Maine Wire]
Garrett Mason
- “When Mr. Charles was involved in the budget, he did nothing but double it.” [Republican Gubernatorial Debate]
- “Let’s not forget about Mr. Charles, who I’m sure is at home right now. Mr. Charles has a lobbying firm called The Charles Group where he lobbies for defense contracts. I am the only one being honest, you have to be honest about who you are and your political connections.” [Republican Gubernatorial Debate]
Ben Midgely
- Called Charles’ plan to cut the 4 billion from the state budget unreasonable. [Republican Gubernatorial Debate]
