Augusta, Maine — In the final stretch of the campaign, Republican gubernatorial candidates continue making it clear that cutting MaineCare and taking health coverage away from Mainers is one of their top priorities.
As WMTM’s Jackie Mundry recently reported, “[Garrett] Mason wants to cut MaineCare spending by removing single, able-bodied adults from the program” and Ben Midgley “added he wants to focus on the state’s welfare system to help shrink the state budget.”
And they’re not alone. Republicans have repeatedly proposed plans that would force Mainers off their coverage:

Jonathan Bush compared MaineCare expansion to Vladimir Putin bombing schools, wants to use AI to kick people off of the program, and specifically wants to kick off people with jobs.

Bobby Charles wants to cut enrollment through imposing burdensome red tape.

Garrett Mason voted against MaineCare expansion in the legislature and wants to repeal the expansion that gave health care to an additional 100,000 Mainers if elected. He also wants to kick off “childless adults.”
Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson released the following statement:
“Republicans are not hiding the ball: they want to kick Mainers off MaineCare. At a time when families are already struggling to afford the health care they need and costs are too high across the board, Republicans are campaigning on making health care more expensive and harder to access.”
